In the heart of South Gippsland amongst the rolling hills and the green grass, is a hive of activity from dusk till dawn.
Starting in 2019, Marlene Knabe a Wildlife Carer created Bush Beings. She has cared, educated and nurtured a range of native animals injured, orphaned or displaced from their natural environment.
It wasn't over a glass of wine that Marlene made the decision to dedicate her spare time to rescuing native animals but I'm sure it helped.
These beautiful photo's are just a few of the animals Marlene has helped rehabilitate and send back to their original or suitable habitat.
To fund her plight these photo's are made into cards by Marlene. The cards are for sale in packs and are available in our online store.
This is Dolly a common wombat. She was picked up on the side of South Gippsland Hwy from her deceased mother's pouch by a caring commuter and taken to a vet clinic. She is my first wombat cared for and started my utter love and respect for stubborn wombats.
Dolly refused to drink for nine days!!! I thought she wasn't going to pull through. With the help of other carers we got her drinking well and she has flourished into an almost ready for release adolescent. She is still sweet natured but progressively starting to get fiesty now.
Wombats need to be adult sized, approx 2 years old to have the best chance defending themselves against other animals and territorial wombats when released.
If you find an injured or abandoned native animal contact your native wildlife rescue as soon as possible. If you must catch the animal place it in a pillow case/ backpack or doona cover and let it calm. Please don't hand it around for selfies.
Donations are always a great help! Marlene buys Wombat milk powder, possum milk powder and the list goes on, mostly at her own expense.
Currently a flight aviary is being completed and a number of pens to suit varying species.
Volunteers are also a possibility in the future but with that comes the need for toilets, showers, insurances and an expansion on the food preparation area.
Australia Post and Wildlife Victoria granted Bush Beings some funds toward the shelter. Along with some lovely locals.
We are a small, self funded, native animal shelter.
Our sole purpose is helping, rehabilitating and releasing our magnificent and unique wildlife back to its natural environment. We are DELWP licensed and registered carers with Wildlife Victoria.
Donations are greatly appreciated and can be done via direct deposit to
